What does the Matt Hampson Foundation do?

Matt Hampson was at the start of a career in professional sport when injury in training with England Under-21 rugby squad resulted in him being paralysed from the neck down and able to breathe only with the aid of a ventilator.

During 17 months in hospital, he received incredible support from the rugby community and beyond, and rather than lament what he had lost, Matt decided to focus on what he could still do and to ‘get busy living’.

That support provided the momentum for creation of the Matt Hampson Foundation to support other young people after serious injury in sport at all levels. In 2018, Matt opened the Foundation’s Get Busy Living Centre as a base to provide physical and emotional support to beneficiaries and the people closest to them.

There, beneficiaries build the skills and confidence to get busy living again, to plan for a return to work, study or sport, and adapt to their new life, focusing on what they can do, not what they can’t.

From half a dozen visitors in its opening week, the Foundation now sees more than 60 beneficiaries each week and is extending facilities in 2026 to welcome more while also developing a network of regional satellite hubs to take its vital support even further.

What Services does the Foundation provide?

The Foundation provides specialist physiotherapy and personal training in an adaptive gym at the Get Busy Living Centre, plus wellbeing and counselling services for beneficiaries and their friends/family. Mentorship and peer support from others on a similar journey are also key components in the community Matt has created to show that serious injury does not have to be an obstacle to ambition, hope and opportunity, or to helping others to achieve their potential.

The Centre also has lodge accommodation for beneficiaries who can stay for a week or more while engaging in intensive rehabilitation and there is also a network of regional hubs covering the South-East, South-West and North-East which allows the team to take support further.
