New Study Suggests E-Cigarettes Are Helping More Smokers Quit

They have certainly garnered mixed opinions since their launch onto the UK market in 2007, but new evidence published this week suggests that e-cigarettes are now proving their worth by helping more people successfully quit smoking. The BBC reports that a new observational study undertaken by University College London and Cancer Research UK indicates that using e-cigarettes may have helped 18,000 extra smokers in England give up in 2015. Positive Findings

Using data from the Smoking Toolkit Study from 2006 through to 2015 and figures from the NHS Stop Smoking Service, the research found that just over 8 million people set a date to quit smoking in this period. The number of smokers who were successful increased by just under 1% for every 1% rise in the number who were using e-cigarettes. It was also noted that smoking rates as a whole fell by 1% from 2014 to 2015.

 

More Research Required?


Although many positives can be taken from this new study, those behind the research have said that it appears the introduction of e-cigarettes to the UK have had no effect on the number of people trying to quit, but rather have influenced the success of those trying to stop smoking. At present, the official stance by UK health professionals remains as it was – that the most effective way to quit smoking is by consulting your GP and using prescription medication and the professional support available through the nationwide NHS Stop Smoking Service. Public Health England states that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes and can help smokers quit when used in conjunction with a smoking cessation service.
