How to Make the Best Apple Crumble

Posted on 01 Feb 2016 by Anna Scott
Well, our Waitrose discount codes, Sainsburys discount codes and House of Fraser discount codes can certainly help, but first we need to decide what constitutes ‘best’. Do we mean the best quality ingredients? Or the easiest? Or perhaps a combination of the two. Understandably, we’ve gone for the latter option today...

There’s nothing wrong with a basic apple crumble – it is one of life’s great pleasures, after all. But to make the very best apple crumble you can, you must choose your own favourite flavour combination. In this case, we’ve chosen our favourite, apple and plum crumble - still very much an apple crumble, but if you’re a traditionalist, just substitute the plum for even more apple! Oh, and don’t forget to check out our Waitrose promo codes, Sainsburys promo codes and House of Fraser promo codes to see how you can save on ingredients and equipment (more details below)…

You will need…

3 large cooking apples (peeled, cored and diced into chunks)

4-6 plums (quartered with stone removed – cut into smaller sections if using large plums)

150g caster sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

50ml water

200g plain flour

150g unsalted butter (room temperature)

100g soft brown sugar

How to bake…

  • Heat your oven to 200 degrees centigrade/gas mark 6

  • Put the plums, apples, water and 50g of the caster sugar in a saucepan. Simmer for a few minutes until all the sugar has dissolved. Transfer to a baking dish

  • Dice the butter and place in a large bowl with the flour, remaining caster sugar and brown sugar. Using your fingertips, rub together until you have a mixture with a course crumb consistency. Even cover the fruit with the topping.

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard
