Who is Oracle Cancer Trust?

Oracle is a small independent UK charity. Head and Neck cancer is one of the areas deeply impacted by low awareness, late diagnosis and unequal access to best treatment and support options. Yet it is one of the fastest growing areas of cancer with much younger people being diagnosed. The impact of COVID is being seen clearly with people being diagnosed later, with more advanced disease and fewer treatment options.

We are a small, highly skilled charity working to provide support where it is most needed to improve survival from Head and Neck cancer. We work to increase awareness of Head and Neck cancers in the wider community, drive earlier diagnosis, and promote discovery of better treatments through funding research grants. At its core Oracle’s work aims to ensure that the medical community, patients and families get as much support as possible to beat the odds. We support programmes and fund research at some of the UK’s leading scientific research institutions including The Institute of Cancer Research, Bart’s/Queen Mary’s University, Newcastle University, The Royal Marsden Hospital, Brunel University and The University of Sunderland.

About Head and Neck cancers:

Rates of Head and Neck cancers are rising fast.

There are 630,000 new cases per year worldwide. UK Head and neck cancer incidence rates have increased by 34% since the 1990s, with an average of 12,400 cases of Head and Neck cancers currently diagnosed each year.

Survival rates vary depending on the type of cancer and stage of diagnosis.

In the UK, 19%-59% of patients survive 10 or more years. 350,000 people die per year of Head and Neck cancers worldwide.

46%-88% of head and neck cancers are preventable, but awareness of the risk factors is low amongst some communities in the UK.

How could your vote and this donation help?

Covid-19 is making access to healthcare and early diagnosis of Head and Neck cancers harder. We are forging collaborations to address growing inequalities in Head and Neck cancers survival in 2022. The following are examples of projects that we have been asked to consider:

Launching a medical research funding round dedicated finding ways to treat late stage and hardest to treat forms of Head and Neck cancer.

Alongside NHS partners, Oracle could trial Head & Neck Cancer Mobile Screening Clinics in high-risk areas.

Alongside community and business partners, Oracle would like to trial awareness campaigns in high-risk communities around early signs of potential disease and how to get them checked fast.

Alongside an NHS Trust, Oracle could pilot a new community nurse role in target communities (reduce readmittance, provide post treatment support and deliver education and awareness to local networks)
