What Does Devon Communities Together do?

Life in Devon’s rural and coastal communities can appear idyllic — but the reality for many people is limited access to services, infrastructure and opportunities. These barriers can leave people isolated, underrepresented and disadvantaged.

Devon Communities Together (DCT) believes every community has the power to shape its own future. For over 60 years, they have championed rural voices, built local capacity and delivered practical solutions that improve lives across Devon. From affordable housing and thriving community buildings, to digital inclusion, community resilience, healthcare access, environmental sustainability and more, they support communities with what matters most to them.

Through innovative projects, expert consultancy and accessible training, DCT are able to bring together communities, funders, policymakers and businesses to make rural and coastal communities across Devon fairer, more connected and more resilient places to live and work.

What services do DCT provide and what campaigns are DCT involved in?

DCT delivers a wide range of services, support and projects aimed at strengthening local communities, improving resilience and tackling inequalities across rural and coastal areas of Devon. Some of the main areas of activity include:

  • Digital connectivity and skills: Through initiatives like Digital Skills Devon, they provide free digital-skills training to help people in rural/coastal communities improve access to services, online help and reduce digital exclusion.

  • Addressing cost-of-living pressures & fuel poverty: They support people facing hardship due to rising costs, offering advice and practical help through the energy-focused initiative Energy Outreach Project to assist households and community groups, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

  • Community development: Empowering communities to identify their strengths and turn them into effective, community-owned projects. This includes supporting community groups, gathering local insight/data and helping people organise around shared needs or goals.

  • Village halls & community buildings support: Supporting village halls and community buildings, run by local volunteers/trustees. Village Halls are the central hub of a rural community, but are self funded and self managed – they need help to thrive and be sustainable centres of connectivity for local people.

  • Supporting the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector: Through a variety of projects they advise, train and support VCSE organisations across Devon on governance, funding, volunteering, business planning and more. This ensures that the VCSE sector can do what they do best; support Devon to be a better place to work and live. DCT help them grow and thrive.

  • Affordable housing & rural economic support: DCT work with communities in Devon to tackle lack of affordable homes, assist local entrepreneurship, support local business/enterprises, and help sustain vital local services (shops, pubs, amenities) so communities remain viable and vibrant.

  • Community resilience, inclusion and sustainability: From helping communities adapt to climate challenges, to making sure rural voices are heard, to promoting diversity and inclusion, DCT helps build community resilience, social cohesion and sustainability in Devon’s rural areas.

Recent or current projects include:

  • Devon Community Resilience Forum – ongoing support in partnership with Environment Agency, Devon County Council and the South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee

  • East Devon VCSE support service - supporting community & social enterprise organisations in East Devon.

  • Digital Skills Devon— free digital-skills training across Devon, funded by UK Government

  • Energy Outreach Project— helping households and communities with energy and fuel poverty issues.
