What Does Communication Matters Do?

Imagine yourself without your voice. Problems with verbal communication can arise for several reasons, and at any age. AAC users include people who have had a brain injury or stroke, those with cognitive impairments, people with autism, those with cerebral palsy, and people with Parkinsons or motor neurone disease that find it difficult to communicate verbally.

Now imagine finding support and guidance on reclaiming your voice - that would be life changing. Communication Matters is the national charity for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) that supports people of all ages who find it hard to communicate because they have little or no clear speech.

It is estimated that more than 300,000 people in the UK could benefit from using AAC, such as computer-based equipment, apps, communication boards and books using text, symbols, or signing. Each person’s needs are unique and their use of AAC systems and technologies will change over time. There is no “one size, fits all” AAC solution.

A membership with Communication Matters includes AAC users, family members and carers, and a range of associated health and education professionals, suppliers, and researchers.

Communication Matters’ Vision for AAC Users

Communication Matters envisions a world where all individuals have a right to a voice through the provision of communication solutions and ongoing support services.

The charity exists to support people who use (AAC) in their basic human right to communicate, be included and heard in an equitable society.

They aim to achieve the above by:

· increasing awareness about AAC

· improving service standards

· encouraging AAC research

· empowering AAC users

What Services does Communication Matters Provide?

Communication Matters works across the UK to promote the best possible communication for people with complex communication needs, aiming to involve AAC users in everything they do.

Their primary focus is to raise awareness and share information with and for children and adults who have communication needs, their families and those who support them. They provide support via their website and host highly valued online support groups for young disabled people and parents from across the UK to meet and chat.

They organise several annual events to raise awareness of AAC and train professionals in the field. Their main event is the International AAC Conference, held in September at the University of Leeds. In 2025, the Conference attracted more than 470 attendees from 21 countries, which included 44 AAC users and 59 parents / carers - the majority of whom were awarded subsidised places to enable AAC users to share best practice and personal experiences. The Conference is also the only CPD opportunity to see all new developments in the AAC field under one roof. Throughout the year, they also hold Workshops and Study Days across the UK. In 2026, they are expanding activities to include Communication Clubs for AAC Users.

Communication Matters produces a journal three times a year, publishing research and developing strategies in the field of AAC as well as sharing the experiences of AAC users. their online AAC Forum of over 2000 members builds community and connection within the AAC community as a place where people can ask all kinds of questions – and post answers - about AAC. Every week, we share a weekly e-newsletter of updates, developments, guidance and support in the rapidly evolving world of AAC.
