Best UK Day Trips to Soak Up the Last of the Summer

Posted on 20 Aug 2018 by Anna Scott
If you’ve already taken your annual summer holiday, the chances are you’re running out of ideas to fill the days before autumn begins. We’ve probably still got a few warmer days left and it would be such a shame to waste them, so why not plan a few day trips? At this point in the season, it’s fair to say you’re looking to save a few pounds, so all our suggestions have your budget in mind too.

Seaside Towns

There’s nothing quite like chowing down on some fish and chips on the seafront, unless said seafront has a particularly bad seagull problem. But there are loads of other things to keep family members amused in the UK’s many charming seaside resorts. You don’t need us to tell you Brighton is well worth a visit if you’ve never been before, but the problem is everyone else in the south east has the same idea when the sun comes out. Not one if you want to avoid crowds then.

Seaford

So, what are the alternatives? A few miles along the Sussex coast, the quaint town of Seaford is easy to reach by train from London and has the same stunning coastline but just that bit quieter. It also boasts lovely shops and eateries as well as the Seven Sisters Country Park if you fancy mixing up your day with a woodland walk. Moving away from the south and heading far north, Glasgow residents have plenty of choices when it comes to seaside towns. Ayr, Prestwick and Largs are all a short train ride away, but Largs has the added attraction of Great Cumbrae Island. Just a short ferry ride drops you off at the picturesque village of Millport from where you can explore. Two seaside towns in one trip! If you fancy combining your outing with a family cycle ride, Chain Reaction Cycles could get you a discount on your first order any new accessories you might need.

The Great Outdoors

But what if you’re a bit fed of the beach by this point? We may be a small country, but we sure do boast a lot of gorgeous countryside and rolling hills. For many city dwellers, a National Park is only a car journey away: those in the south can easily get to the South Downs (another one if you want a quieter alternative to the Brighton bustle) and Northerners have the Yorkshire Moors, the Lake District, the Peak District and Northumberland. If you think you might need to prepare with some walking boots (and waterproofs just in case), see if our Blacks promo codes can save you money on your outdoor gear. Another great value day out in the country is a visit to an RSPB reserve. Not only do you get peaceful surrounds, but you also get to learn about nature too. Entry is very reasonable, but becoming a member gets you free entry as well as other gifts and benefits.

Londoners don’t even need to venture outside of the city – the glorious greens of Richmond Park and Greenwich Park are perfect picnic spots. If you’re perfectly happy with your urbans surrounds but still want to get a spot of sunshine, why not see what local walking tours are available? Not only will you catch those rays, but you’ll also get to see a quirky side to your city that you didn’t know about.

Country Piles

Yes, entry to a stately home or a castle and its grounds can be pricey, but there are ways you can save. Becoming a member of an organisation like the National Trust, National Trust of Scotland or English Heritage not gives you free entry when you visit, but you’ll also be doing your bit to preserve the nation’s history! Monthly membership fees are very reasonable and there have plenty of well-known and not so well-known castles and houses to visit including Corfe Castle in Dorset, Culzean Castle in Ayrshire and Beeston Castle in Cheshire. If you fancy extending that day trip by a night or two, Red Letter Days have lots of short break offers for country house weekends and you could get an extra discount on your stay too.
