What Does Roundabout Do?

Roundabout is South Yorkshire’s youth homelessness charity, dedicated to ending youth homelessness. They believe that with a safe home and the right support, every young person can build a positive, independent future and break the cycle of homelessness.

Since 1977, they've supported thousands of young people, and today they work with more than 400 aged 16–25 every single day. Each journey into homelessness is unique — some young people simply need help through a tough period, while others have faced deep challenges, often linked to trauma in childhood. Without early support, those experiences can define their futures.

Many of the young people they meet feel let down and find it hard to trust. Roundabout is there to bring stability and understanding. Their wide range of services offer tailored support based on each young person’s individual needs — from emergency accommodation to training, education, and life skills.

Every young person’s journey to independence looks different, but their aim is the same: to empower them to believe in themselves, make positive choices, and build brighter, safer futures. They help them find a new route — one that may be difficult at times, but with their guidance, leads to confidence, opportunity, and lasting change.

What Services do Roundabout Provide?

Every young person and their situation is different – some may need support from many services, others just one. Either way, they strive to make the end result the same: that the young person is safe, off the streets and ready to lead a successful life independently.

Roundabout offers a comprehensive suite of services that span from early intervention through to independent living. At the prevention end, their Homeless Prevention team works with young people and families to help avoid homelessness by offering mediation, advice and support tailored to relationship breakdown or risk of losing a safe home.

For those who do become homeless, Roundabout provides emergency accommodation and supported hostels in Sheffield and Rotherham. These settings include individual bedrooms, life‑skills sessions and one‑to‑one support to boost confidence, independence, budget skills and readiness for the next step.

When young people are living independently, Roundabout’s Tenancy Support (floating support) helps them sustain their tenancy. This covers finances, health, education, employment, housing rights and other practical and emotional support.

Across all stages, the charity also offers additional support around mental health, counselling, employment, education and skills. They recognise that homelessness often intersects with childhood trauma, health issues and barriers to training or work, so the wrap‑around support ensures each young person has access to services that help them access education, job opportunities and long‑term stability.

In summary, Roundabout takes a full‑spectrum approach: prevention and mediation → emergency and supported accommodation → tenancy sustainment and independent living — all underpinned by targeted mental‑health, education and employment services crafted to help each young person break the cycle of homelessness.
