5 Underappreciated Inventions We Can’t Live Without

Posted on 24 Jul 2016 by Anna Scott
I think we can all agree that smartphones are pretty great. The only exception to this blanket devotion is when they slip out of our hands and the screen smashes - no they’re not so great then, once they lose the very thing that makes them functional. Well, we can soon all breathe a huge sigh of relief because this week saw the announcement that a new generation of ‘Gorilla Glass’ has been invented so your smartphone will survive more than 80% of drops from 1.6 m.

The fact is we should probably be taking a bit more care with such expensive gadgets so these inventions are unnecessary, but that’s another matter altogether. However, there’s no denying a stronger screen would be a godsend the to the more accident prone among us, but inventions and innovations such as this are the sort that tend to get forgotten by history and overshadowed by much flashier gadgets and devices. So to shine a light on these underrated wonders, here is a list of some inventions that we should really be showing a bit more love to…

Extension Leads

Black Male PlugNecessary yes, but our argument is that they have become even more so in recent times. Years ago they were merely a way to help us reach a not-very-helpfully-placed socket, but these days they really are something we can’t live without. Back when we only had to worry about plugging in our TVs and video recorders, extension leads weren’t even required behind the telly, but now it’s a completely different story. And with the average smartphone battery time not even lasting half a day, how many of us sit on the sofa plugged into out closest extension lead because the nearest socket is ALWAYS on the opposite side of the room to where we’re sitting?

Pockets

Hands in pocketsIt should be a rule of law that every dress or pair of jeans has pockets. Granted, men probably don’t suffer from this pocket shortage as much as women, but until you fully experience the disappoint of realising a new pair of jeans only has stitched on ones, you’ll never really know true pocket pain. We NEED pockets, if only to carry around our massive smartphones.

Sat-Navs

Sat navThis one is slightly more obvious, but it was only the other day when I realised quite how much we’ve come to rely on them after our sat-nav randomly wiped all its maps and using our phones resulted in taking a detour that added an extra two hours onto the journey. It certain circumstances sat-nav trumps smartphone: fact.

Hairdryers

Drying hairAnother one where it’s a case of ‘you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone’. Or rather, you do know what you got, because what you got is sopping wet hair and no way to get it dry quickly before you have to leave the house in 10 minutes. Hairdryers, never leave us.

Instant Messaging

Text messagingIt’s very easy to say ‘we can’t live without smartphones’, but I don’t actually think that’s true. There are many aspects of our smartphones that we could easily live without (most social media apps for starters, although we don’t like to admit it), but one thing I would be most reluctant to give up is any form of instant messaging. Remember the days when we had to actually call people? And we don’t even do that on smartphones anymore. If you’d arranged to meet up with someone, you had to put your trust in them that they’d turn up because there would be no way of sending them a passive aggressive text if they didn’t. Our lifestyles have moved onto such an extent that I don’t think we’d be able to function without this er, function. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is very much up for debate.

As well as investing in some new generation ‘Gorilla Glass’ when you upgrade your phone, you can keep those oh-so-essential gadgets protected with Gadget Buddy promo codes that save you 15% on your gadget insurance. And for all the latest technological innovations, be they fancy or basic, you can use Currys discount vouchers and Apple Store discount codes to save a bit of money on your new purchases.

Unfortunately, none of these can give you easier access to pockets. Only a new pair of jeans or a sewing kit can do that…
