About Yorkshire Children’s Charity: Mission, Vision & Values

Yorkshire Children’s Charity is a registered charity (charity number 1196738) based in Leeds and serving children and young people across the Yorkshire region. From its launch in 2022, it has been described as a needs-led charity, existing solely to help the children who need us whether they are at a disadvantage due to disability, ill-health, or financial circumstance.

Their vision is bold yet simple: they aspire to reach every child in Yorkshire who needs help, and make childhood poverty a thing of the past. They approach this through a combination of immediate support (grants, equipment, specialist items) and longer-term interventions designed to build independence, skills and opportunity.

Yorkshire Children’s Charity is anchored in the following core values:

  • Accessible – ensuring families and children can readily get the help they need.

  • Focused – children and young people are at the heart of every decision the charity makes.

  • Genuine – transparency and honesty underpin how the organisation operates.

  • Caring – a deep commitment to beneficiaries, their families and communities.

  • Measurable – they emphasise being able to demonstrate real, tangible difference.

  • Beneficiary First – every child, regardless of ability or background, has the right to fulfil their unique potential.

  • Fun – recognising that being young should include play, enjoyment and positive experiences.

This combination of urgency (providing direct support) and ambition (tackling root causes) sets the organisation apart: they both step in at moments of real need and also invest in longer-term change.

What They Do: Programmes, Projects & Real-World Impact

Immediate Grant Giving

Yorkshire Children’s Charity offers grants to children and families facing disadvantage due to illness, disability or financial hardship. From specialist equipment and wheelchairs to school shoes, birthday presents or everyday essentials, they work to ensure that children are not held back by circumstances beyond their control.

They also partner with schools to ensure children arrive at school “warm, dry and ready to learn” – a critical factor when poverty and deprivation obstruct access to education.

Strategic Programmes & Partnerships

Beyond direct support, the charity delivers a suite of programmes designed to deliver systemic change:

  • The “Schools Out” initiative is cited as an example: they take children from schools to experiences (for example to Canon Hall Farm) that broaden horizons and create memorable opportunities.

  • The “Great Yorkshire Build” programme is a strategic model partnering with commercial, public and third sectors to transform school facilities (especially for children with special educational needs and disabilities – SEND).

    • For example, at Brooklands School in Skipton, the model delivered sensory rooms, rebound therapy facilities and improved infrastructure, supported by pro-bono contractors and significant “gifts in kind” from the property sector.

  • Their events and fundraising include major regional activities and awards (such as “The Yorkshires” awards) which help raise both visibility and funds.

Real-Life Need & Scale

Yorkshire Children’s Charity highlights that in the region there are over 2,300 children identified as being in “critical need” this winter alone (as of their website update), and they face a funding shortfall of £114,000 to ensure efforts reach every child who needs help.

Financially, the charity’s latest accounts (year ending 31 December 2024) show total income of approximately £2.38 million and expenditure of £2.19 million.

Their approach is quantitative and qualitative: they know the scale of the problem, and they insist on measuring the difference they make.
