Who Are Womankind Charity?womankind logo

Run by women for women since 1986, Womankind helps women living in Bristol and the surrounding area to improve their mental health and well-being, enabling them to have a better quality of life. We aim to reach the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups of women, particularly those with little or no access to community mental health support.

Women’s Current Needs

Since the pandemic started there has been a significant increase in women contacting us who are experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, domestic and sexual violence, trauma symptoms as a result of childhood abuse, relationship problems, grief, financial hardship, loneliness and social isolation. Women have been severely affected by the pandemic both during and post lockdown conditions, as they are among the most financially vulnerable, more likely to experience violence and abuse, and to be parenting and caring for others alone. We are expecting continuing increased demand for mental health support over the next two years, as an impact of the pandemic.

About Womankind’s Services

Our telephone and webchat helpline handles over 5,000 calls and emails a year; over 40% of the callers have suffered sexual abuse/assault, rape, or domestic abuse. It is the only women’s mental health helpline in the Bristol area and is a vital resource.

Our face-to-face services (online or in person) help over 400 women a year. These include specialist counselling (young women, deaf women, refugees and trafficked women (with interpreters), and survivors of sexual violence), counselling for clients with complex mental health needs, our therapeutic groups, and a peer befriending service providing isolated women with mental health problems and/or survivors of rape and sexual abuse, with tailored support from a volunteer befriender.

What Womankind's Clients Say:

“I was isolated before lockdown and now it’s even worse, you’re the only person I see every week, just knowing you are there makes all the difference”.
“I now know what I need to do to look after myself in relationships and I can take better care of my girls”.
“This is an amazing service and I am really grateful to have had this support as it has changed my life in so many positive ways”.
